Local Schools Perform Better Than Expected
ATLANTA - The state expects to release soon a new round of College and Career Readiness Performance Index school report cards.
But the scores only tell part of the story, according to Jarod Apperson, a Ph.D. student in economics in Atlanta’s Georgia State University. Since family income is the single best predictor of academic performance, Apperson believes any analysis of school report cards ought to take into account schools’ poverty levels. Apperson set out to do just that. Apperson’s data suggest that most Athens area school systems are actually performing well above expectations. All Madison and Jackson county schools exceeded expectations, as did many in Oconee and Barrow and several in Clarke County. State chartered schools for the most part did not live up to expectations, according to Apperson’s charts. More info
