Oconee Man Charged in Spree of Car Break-Ins

25 February 2014

ATHENS - Athens Clarke County Police arrested a suspected thief on Sunday after several Athens students reported car break-ins. Raymond Cole McDaniel, 21, of Bishop, was arrested and linked to four car break-ins. Police believe that there could be even more.

“I recovered a lot of stolen stuff, now I just have to locate the victims,” Detective Jody Thompson said.

Investigators got a lead when two offenses were reported Friday and Saturday night at Appleby Mews apartments on Barrington Place. Officers were able to file reports that included vehicle information from witnesses.

In one of the reports, a student reported that his laptop was gone within minutes after visiting his friend at the apartment complex. The student was then able to use the stolen laptop’s GPS to locate it. The police went to that location and found a man in possession of the laptop who said he bought it for $150, police said. Police were able to trace the man who sold the stolen laptop to a motel on Atlanta highway.

The police arrested McDaniel at the motel room where they found various stolen goods. There also was evidence of drug use in the motel room, including pipes, spoons and needles, according to Thompson.

“The entering-autos appear to have been a drug-fueled spree,” the detective said.

McDaniel was charged with four counts of entering auto, and one count each of theft by receiving stolen property, theft by deception, possession of drug objects, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has previously been arrested numerous times in Oconee County on burglary and theft charges.
