AADM Holding Meetup to Talk About Teens' Experience with March for Our Lives in D.C.

Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement

The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement is holding its monthly Teen Social Justice Meetup this evening. The students are sharing their perspective on gun violence, school safety, youth activism and experience from March For Our Live-Athens to D.C.

AADM President and Co-founder Mokah Jasmine Johnson says they will also hold a question and answer session with local candidates for Clarke County School Board.

"I'm trying to help to support the students in bringing their voice forward to address some of the issues that impact them. They'll be able to ask some of the candidates that are running for positions on the schoolboard, questions that are concerning to them and regarding what's going on at their school. Kids are scared of going to school. Or this might happen, like as far as bullying or shootings or anything," said Johnson.

Johnson says it’s important to listen to the students, as well as to provide guidance.

"We didn't have access to that much information, and have an information overload. So, it's like we need to guide them so they can understand what's news, what's real news, how do you advocate for your rights safely in the times that we're in," said Johnson. "The internet is still new to a lot of people. We're familiar with it, but we don't know the repercussions down the line. And the youth, it's going to affect them more because they're more engaged in that technology."

That meeting is taking place at the Athens library. It ends at 6:30 pm.
