Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement to Host Town Hall

Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement

Members of the community are invited to attend an Athens Town Hall Meeting on Community Police, Race Relations and Safety tomorrow evening at the Athens Library.

The meeting is being presented by the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement. President and Co-founder Mokah Jasmine Johnson.

“It’s for Athens-Clarke County Police to hear how the community feels, to hear the voices, and to hear: what are the solutions that the community would like? How does the community like to be governed? Is the current effort that they’re making—is it working or is it not working? Or do they need to do more? And also, from the community aspect, they need to also hear the efforts that Athens-Clarke County police have been making,” Johnson says.

Guests include ACCPD Chief Scott Freeman, Police Chaplain Shane Sims and the father of the 10-year old child who was restrained by police in July.

“There’s a couple of incidents that have happened recently that have kind of divided our community even more than it was before dealing with local policing,” Johnson says. “With Chief Freeman, he’s definitely tried to be transparent, but I think because of historical things that have happened and things that have gone on in the nation, that people are not seeing it.

Citizens can provide feedback in advance by visiting surveymonkey.com. The event will include a discussion panel and audience questions.
