Cinema for a Cause to Benefit Athens Nonprofits

Two Athens nonprofits will receive a financial boost when movie-goers purchase tickets at Georgia Theatre Company theatres this Sunday. Books for Keeps and Prevent Child Abuse Athens are just two of several organizations benefiting from the 15th Annual Cinemas for a Cause charity event. Tiara Smith is Clinical Supervisor with Prevent Child Abuse Athens.

“We do a lot of family events, and we do them based on grant funding,” according to Smith. “With additional dollars we are able to do more events or make the events that we do bigger and better for our families.”

She says this is the second year the agency has been selected.

Leslie Hale is with Executive Director of Books for Keeps.

“For us the amount that could be raised just through this one-day event could be enough to sponsor a small school in our program, to send every child in that school home with 12 books each,” Hale said. “That’s from a day where you get to go the movies.”

Georgia Theatre Company holds the event at all 25 locations throughout Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and Virginia.

The company has two locations in Athens, University and Beechwood Cinemas.

Last year, the company raised nearly $175, 000 for 34 local charities.
