Local Students Have Organized Rally in Solidarity with "March for Our Lives" to Take Place Saturday

March for Our Lives Athens

Athens college and high school students are taking part in a rally at the UGA Arch to end gun violence this Saturday.

The Athens event is one of hundreds of satellite marches and rallies scheduled around the nation planned to coincide with the "March For Our Lives" event in Washington D.C. They were planned in the wake of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Mallory Harris is one of the organizers.

"So we have a lot of power in that sense, that the stakes aren't as high for us in terms of the backlash that we could get. But the stakes are really high for us in terms of what the lack of real gun legislation is doing to us and doing to our peers," said Harris. "And the message that the Parkland students have been so effective in getting out is like we care about this deeply, we're the voters of the future. We're going to have voter registration at our event actually. But this is very formative for us in terms of how we will be voting in the future."

Members of the community are welcome at the rally.

"It's being organized primarily by UGA students. But we really want to make sure that we have a strong showing from the community, especially high school students who have been driving this movement in Florida. We want to see Athens high school students there. And we're going to have some of them actually speaking which is really exciting," said Harris.

The rally is being held Saturday, March 24th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
