Northeast Georgia Labor Force Hits Record High

Georgia Department of Labor

The Northeast Georgia region’s labor force and number of employed has risen in June to record highs as summer job seekers hit the market, according to Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.

This has also caused a slight increase in the unemployment rate, but indicators remain positive for the year. Butler said recent high school and college graduates entering the workforce cause this increase and he remains confident in the overall job market.
The number of employed residents in the region is up 160 from the previous month and up 10,641 for the year.

The Northeast Georgia labor force in June has increased by 2,390 from the last month, nearly four times the monthly average increase over the year. As a result of this spike in labor force, the unemployment rate in Northeast Georgia region increased to 4 percent, which is the second lowest unemployment rate of Georgia’s 12 regions.

“So even though the rate went up for the month of June,” Butler said, “overall great numbers as we’re seeing a record number of individuals employed, fewer layoffs and more people attracted to the job market in Northeast Georgia.”

The Northeast Georgia region includes Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Jasper, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe and Walton counties.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com, showed over 1,800 active job postings in the Northeast Georgia region for June.
