Red Cross facing Critical Blood Shortage

Despite issuing an emergency call for blood and platelet donors earlier this month, and thousands of people responding, the American Red Cross continues to face a critical blood shortage. Eligible donors of all types are urged to give now.

Kristen Stancil is Communications Manager with the agency, she says there was a 30 percent increase in blood donation appoints through the middle of the month, but blood products are constantly being distributed so more donations are needed to replenish the blood supply.

“We did see a shortfall in donations in May and June, it was down 61,000 donations,” Stancil said. “That is what prompted the emergency call for donors in early July and we still have that need for donors to come in to help replenish the blood supply.”

For more information or to schedule an appointment use the blood donor app, visit red cross blood dot org, or call 1-800-red cross or 800 733-2767.

As a special thank you, those who come out to give blood or platelets with the Red Cross July 26 through Aug. 31 will be emailed a $5 Target eGiftCard™.
