The job numbers are out and Georgia set multiple records in July. That’s according to the Georgia Department of Labor. Commissioner Mark Butler says the state’s unemployment rate dipped below four percent for the first time in more than 15 years.
The last time Georgia’s unemployment rate was 3.9 percent was in July 2001.
“We’re seeing roughly twice as many people becoming employed every single month than we are seeing actual job creation which is good because we have a lot of job openings,” according to Butler.
In July, Georgia added another 5,300 jobs to push the state’s total number to 4.54 million – a record. Over the past year, Georgia added 83,200 new jobs.
“That also means that we are also tackling that long-term unemployed problem also because we are seeing more individuals become employed than we are seeing being added to the labor force every month. When you take a look at everything all together, in the big picture, we’re seeing Georgia make some really big strides in the last two to three years.”

At the same time, Georgia set records for jobs, labor force, and number of employed residents. Butler says the state’s economy is continuing to grow.
“A lot of these individuals that are coming into the work force, they are finding those jobs that we’re seeing posted right now. That’s really what I put more stock into, are you continuing to create jobs, are they the kind of jobs your population can get and are you attracting more talent to your state. When you take a look at Georgia, we’re winning in all those areas.”
Growing sectors include Trade, transportation and utilities, construction, and education.
