Elberton Man Killed in Quarry Accident Identified

The man killed in an accident Thursday at a granite quarry in Oglethorpe County has been identified. Coroner Howard Sanders says 36-year old Matthew Kantala of Elbertotn was drilling a section of granite at the Blue Sky Quarry in Elberton. While trying to avoid a large section of the stone which broke away, Kantala fell and the rock, weighing 16,000 pounds fell on him, killing him instantly. The incident is being investigated by the Oglethorpe Sheriff’s office, Coroner, Elbert County Granite Association, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA.
