County Manager Blaine Williams on New Animal Services Department/New Shelter Hours

The Athens-Clarke County Animal Shelter is changing its hours effective Sunday November 3rd. The move comes as part of the effort to provide more consistency and better access by adding two additional hours for public shelter services each week.

County Manager Blaine Williams says that’s just one of the changes at the newly designated Department of Animal Services.

“We’ll have a department director and hopefully we have onboard by the beginning of January,” Williams said.

Applications for that position are being accepted through November 25th at www.accgov.com/jobs.

Earlier this month, the ACC Commission approved established Animal Services as an independent department which now reports directly to the manager’s office. The move also created three new full-time positions.

“I named a new interim director, Selah Gardiner, who had previously been the volunteer coordinator, and I think she and the staff are doing an excellent of job of identifying things that need to be fixed and fixing them, along with our partners.”

In July, the shelter euthanized more than 30 cats after a suspected outbreak of feline panleukopenia.

“I’m hopeful that we can continue on and be prepared next year, when the so-called kitten season comes down.”

The new hours are 11 am until 5 pm every day of the week except Wednesdays when the facility is closed. The shelter had been open form 10 am until 4 pm weekdays and noon until 4 on Sundays.
