Athens:
On Tuesday, Athens voters approved the SPLOST 2020 referendum. More than 7,000 residents voted for the measure compared to just over 1900 who opposed the one percent sales tax. The current SPLOST will end in March of 2020 and collections for the new tax will start in April 2020.
The 11-year SPLOST will raise over 313 million to pay for a list of 37 items.
Watkinsville:
The race for the Watkinsville mayor’s seat was a close one. Challenger Bob Smith received 402 votes to defeat incumbent mayor Dave Shearon by just two votes. In spite of the close result, the Oconee County Board of Elections has not announced a re-count.
Watkinsville also approved allowing Sunday alcohol sales to start at 11 AM. Previously, the sale of alcohol was restricted to after 12:30 PM on Sundays.
