The University of Georgia will establish a national center to fight the flu. The National Institutes of Health awarded UGA the contract to establish the Center for Influenza Disease and Emergence Research or CIDER. The seven-year contract will provide up to $92 million dollars, starting with one million dollars in funding for the first year.
Scientists in the multi-institutional center will work to increase understanding of influenza virus emergence and infection in humans and animals while also making preparations to combat future outbreaks or pandemics.
This is the second major NIH contract for influenza research for UGA in less than two years, for a total potential investment of more than $220 million.
The research will unite scientists from a wide range of disciplines across the university.
