Athens Clarke County residents and local lawmakers are rallying outside City Hall at 4 p.m. today in advance of a Mayor and Commission meeting where commissioners are expected to discuss a new local redistricting proposal drafted by Rep. Spencer Frye.
Frye released his map on Wednesday, just over a week after the four Republican members of Athens-Clarke County’s state legislative delegation released a controversial map that, if passed, would draw three sitting commissioners out of their own districts.

Frye’s map appears to keep all commissioners in their districts, though many districts would still see significant changes.

Here’s Representative Frye speaking to Alexia Ridley earlier this week, comparing his map to the one created by the Republican delegation.

“And what we did was tighten the map back up to where it keeps more communities of interest together and separates less voting precincts. It’s just a less disruptive map that achieves all of the goals that they touted.”

Jeanne Davis reports.
