Athens struggles to hit a third of their 2018 midterm votes

While over 1.2 million Georgians have cast their ballot so far -- 48% more voters than at this point in the 2018 midterm, turnout in Athens is slower than what is happening through much of the rest of the state.

In the 2018 midterm elections, 20,014 Athenians voted early in person. But, with just __ days of early voting remaining, 6,639 voters have voted early this year as of Friday morning.

GeorgiaVotes.com, a non-partisan early voting tallying website, reports that only around 10% of Clarke County voters have voted either by early or mail-in ballot. Older voters make up most of the county’s turnout, with fewer than 30% of voters under 50 years old, despite the county having a median age of 28.

White voters make up nearly 63% of voters so far, while Black voters comprise roughly 26% of the electorate.

In response to flagging turnout, elections officials in Clarke County have expanded next week’s early voting hours. Updated information on early voting dates, times, and locations is available at accgov.com/advancevoting.
