Some of Athens civil rights pioneers were recognized Sunday. The five African American students who broke the color barrier in the Clarke County School District, Ms. Wilucia Green, her sister Ms. Marjorie Green, Ms. Bonnie Hampton Travis, Dr. Agnes Green, and Mr. Scott Killian, were honored 60 years after making history. The event was sponsored by the Athens branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life & History (ASALH). Michael Thurmond, Mayor Keely Girtz, and CCSD Superintendent Dr. Robbie Hooker were among those turning out to honor the students.
