The University of Georgia will host Spelman College president Helene Gayle in conversation with UGA alum Charlayne Hunter-Gault for the 2024 Holmes-Hunter Lecture.
Gayle has worked as a pediatrician and public health physician with expertise in economic development and humanitarian issues. She served as CEO of The Chicago Trust, led the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s work on HIV and AIDS and was appointed for President Biden’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States.
The Holmes-Hunter Lecture has been held annually since 1985 and focuses on race relations, civil rights and education. It honors Hunter-Gault and Hamilton Holmes Sr., the first two Black students to attend UGA. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, at 2 p.m. in the UGA Chapel.
