Georgia’s state economist is warning lawmakers that a recession could drive down state tax collections in coming months.

State economist Robert “Bob” Buschman told Georgia lawmakers on Tuesday that he expects the national and state economies to shift into reverse in the coming months. He says growth will be very weak if the economy avoids a recession.

Meanwhile, Republican Gov. Brian Kemp is again portraying his budget as a way to spur further economic growth. [Speaking to lawmakers from Switzerland on Tuesday] Kemp said Georgia should use its surplus to invest in transportation, pay down debt, cut taxes and boost employee pay.

Kemp addressed lawmakers from Switzerland Tuesday.
