Legislation targeting libraries, transgender youths, and sex education stalled in Georgia General Assembly

Library of Congress

HB 1104 began as a general bill to address mental health risks for student-athletes, adding increased mental health screenings and preparticipation physical examinations.

The bill was transformed in a Senate committee, however, adding specific barriers for transgender athletes, including banning them completely from playing sports in school and using restrooms that align with their gender. The bill also prevents sex education from being taught before the sixth grade.

SB 390 is an attempt to end connections between public and school libraries, and the American Library Association. The bill would also cut off taxpayer dollars from supporting the association.

Both bills can be reintroduced in next year’s legislative session.
