Several commissioners, including District 8 Commissioner Carol Myers, whose constituency encompasses the area, were also opposed.

“I’ve heard the Green Acres neighbors very clearly this evening that they do not find this project compatible. They’ve discussed storm water, traffic, spot zoning and more,” she stated during last month’s meeting.

Supporters of the development, however, state that it will bring long-needed revitalization to the area.

The Commission is also set to vote on a controversial measure that would limit its ability to modify amendments proposed by the county’s Planning Commission. The amendment drew criticism from Commissioner Melissa Link of the 2nd District last month.

“We’re the elected body who represents the people. The Planning Cpmmission, like Commissioner Myers pointed out, there’s nobody from the East Side on the Planning Commission. I mean, in democracy, the final decision should rest with the representatives of the people,” she said.

Also on the agenda is the distribution of over half a million dollars to community partners and nonprofits. $120,000 of these funds are set to go to the Athens Area Homeless Shelter.
