Local Author’s Book Spancil Hill Describes Post-Famine Ireland

Leara Rhodes is an Associate Professor Emerita of Journalism at the University of Georgia. Her novel Spancil Hill was published this year, and takes place in Ireland in the late 19th century. It tells the story of a young man whose talent for taking care of horses brings him to the United States. WUGA’s Emma Auer sat down with Leara Rhodes earlier this week to discuss her novel.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
