Despite security concerns, the Mayor and Commission will hold a regularly scheduled meeting tonight.

At tonight’s meeting, the mayor and commission will review new site selection criteria for Fire Station #5, which is currently located on Whit Davis Road. By moving the fire station, the county says it hopes to increase the percentage of Athenians within 2.5 miles of a fire station. The county says the planned move will also help maintain lower insurance rates.

New site selection criteria will require the proposed site to be at least 300 feet away from nearby homes.

In addition, the mayor and commission will consider approving a plan to allocate nearly two million dollars for affordable housing projects for next year. The money will come from federal Housing and Urban Development funds.
