With very low turnout, Bagby clinches a win for open school board seat

Nicole Jordan

After a runoff election that saw just two percent of registered voters show up, Mary Bagby defeated incumbent Claudia Butts for the District 2 seat on the Clarke County Board of Education.

A total of just 160 of the district’s 7,640 voters cast a ballot in Tuesday’s runoff that saw Bagby clinch a 20-vote victory, 90 votes to 70 for Butts. In the May 21 local elections, Butts came out on top by 20 votes, setting up the lackluster runoff.

While the two candidates nearly tied for the 63 votes cast on election day itself, Bagby pulled in a large share of early and absentee mail votes.

Bagby will take up her new position in January.
