Former President Donald Trump maintains a lead over President Joe Biden in Georgia, according to a new poll conducted for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution by the University of Georgia.
The poll, conducted earlier this month and surveying 1,000 likely voters shows Trump with a five-point lead over Biden, 43 – 38. However, the pollster warns that the race is still a statistical tie.
As is often the case with Democratic candidates, Biden holds a healthy lead over Trump among Black voters, 69 – 9. However, there are troubling signs in Black support for Biden, with 12% of Black voters saying they are undecided. Another ten percent say they support another candidate, including 9.6% who say they back independent Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Perhaps more troubling for Biden is a major erosion of support among young voters. Just 12% of voters ages 18 – 29 expressed support for the President, compared to 37% supporting Trump. Nearly 30% of younger voters said they were voting for Kennedy.
Biden’s anemic performance with young voters is a dramatic drop from earlier this year, when an AJC poll showed 35% of voters aged 18 – 29 supporting Biden. Trump’s support among younger voters also slumped, but only by about ten points.
