ACC Gov Seeks Input on Mall Area projects: infrastructure, economic development, housing, and more

Georgia Square Mall

Spanning almost 200 acres and creating hundreds of affordable housing units, the Mall Area Tax Allocation District is a major redevelopment project in Athens. Now, local officials want residents to suggest what public benefits they would like to see built in the area.

As the redevelopment of the Mall Area Tax Allocation District comes closer, Athens residents can provide their input through an online survey and two open houses this month. The online survey is available at the ACC Tax Allocation Districts webpage and is accessible until July 31st.

The open houses and survey are open to all residents of Athens-Clarke County, not just mall area Athenians.

Tax Allocation Districts use property tax increases generated by redevelopment in a specific area to fund infrastructure improvements, like sidewalks, green spaces, and utilities.

In addition to the online survey, the county government will host drop-in open houses on July 18th and 23rd from 5-7 pm at 275 Cleveland Road, where attendees can provide ideas for the projects that will be funded by the TAD. The government has identified four goals for the use of TAD funds in the mall area: public infrastructure, economic development opportunities, affordable housing, and youth development.
