Thermal imaging can keep fruits and vegetables fresh for longer

A recent University of Georgia review finds that new temperature measuring tools can improve the process of harvesting various fruits and vegetables, amid fluctuating temperatures.

Temperature spikes are one of the main causes of premature spoilage and rotting in produce. These extreme fluctuations are more common than in previous years, making the harvesting process more difficult and yielding produce with more defects.

The new technology collects the infrared radiation coming off of fruits and vegetables to tell when the produce needs to be harvested.

Most farmers just use the typical thermometers that tell you if you’re sick. Poking into fruits and vegetables repeatedly to read it’s temperature can damage the product even more. So using thermal image technology can help to read the change in temperature without actually making contact.
