The last ballots in Athens-Clarke County will be cast on Tuesday for the November General Election. Counting will start Tuesday evening.

Following state law, the Elections Office will begin counting ballots this evening at 7:30, after polls close at 7. Absentee ballots will also be tabulated. Charlotte Sosebee is the Director of Elections and Voter Registration. She says counting absentee ballots is a multistep process.

“So state law allows us to do early processing of our absentee ballots. We remove the oath envelope, we remove the secrecy envelope, and then we begin to batch our ballots.

Sosebee says batches are run through an optical scanner and added to an ongoing tally.

“On Election Day, once we have completed our processing, we begin tabulating. Tabulating is removing the memory card and uploading it to our election night reporting.”

The Elections office began processing absentee ballots on Wednesday the 30th.
