ACC government to consider settling Charles Hardy lawsuit, more

The first regular session of the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission is set for Tuesday, where ordinances like East Washington Street Park Construction, Georgia Department of Transportation local maintenance improvements, and the resolution to approve settlement claims of Charles Hardy.

The Mayor and Commission are set to resolve a legal battle with Charles Hardy, previously the CEO of Athens Alliance Coalition and Director of First Step Encampment, who was convicted of assaulting a resident of the camp in 2023.

Hardy filed a lawsuit in February against Athens-Clarke County, claiming he was denied access to retrieve personal belongings from the encampment and that they were stolen or destroyed. The Commission will consider approving a settlement that would pay Hardy $7,500.

Various SPLOST and TSPLOST projects will be presented for consideration and approval that have been discussed in previous mayor and commission meetings, such as the Sycamore Drive Pedestrian Improvements Project and the proposed project concept of renovating the courthouse.

The courthouse renovations will look into expanding the workspace, along with modernizing elevators- as two of the three are unusable- and HVAC and generator upgrades.

The mayor and commission regular session meeting is set at its usual 6 p.m. starting time and will be streamed live on www.accgov.com/videos. All meetings are available on the ACC website after airing.
