Hurricane Irma hasn’t made land fall in the US yet, but her presence is already being felt in Georgia. Governor Deal has issued a mandatory evacuation order for city of Savannah, other coastal areas, starting Saturday. It covers all areas east of I-95, all of Chatham County and some areas west of I-95 that could be impacted by potential storm surge from Hurricane Irma.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is accepting outdated prescription medications — pills and tablets only.

You can take them to one of ACCPD’s prescription drug drop-off boxes located at the Lexington Road or Mall precincts. 

The department receives large amounts of medications that are no longer needed or that are out of date. Police are accepting prescription tablets/pills in their original containers, plastic bags, or blister and daily packs, but no loose pills.

The Athens-Clarke Police Department is investigating a death at a local hotel.

According to a new release from the department’s Public Information Officer, Epifanio Rodriguez, officers were called to the scene at the Best Western Hotel on Milledge Avenue around 2:00 on Sunday afternoon.

They were informed by housekeeping that they believed one of their guests was deceased in a room. Police say the cause of death is not known at this time and an autopsy will be conducted.
