According to GeorgiaVotes.com, nearly 1,332 Athens residents have cast their ballots at the polls in advance following the first day of in-person early voting for the Georgia Senate runoff election. This accounts for about 1 percent of the 81,090 individuals in the county that are registered to vote.

Georgia Votes also states that 15,298 absentee ballots have been requested.

The last day to vote early is December 31, which is also the last day to request an absentee ballot.

Governor Brian Kemp provided a COVID-19 update for the state Tuesday afternoon. 

Kemp along with state Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey announced that Georgia will receive a limited number of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines within the next few weeks. Distribution of these vaccines will be limited to healthcare providers working on the frontline as well as both residents and workers of long-term care facilities. 

Athens News Matters: Cuban Tree Frogs

The first Cuban Tree Frogs, larger than native tree frog species, were spotted in Georgia over a decade ago. Now state wildlife officials are warning that these frogs may be causing ecological problems. Daniel Sollenberger (Department of Natural Resources) and Dr. John Maerz (Josiah Meigs Distinguished Professor, Wildlife) join us to explain how this invasive species ended up in our ecosystem and the impacts they have had since their arrival.

The December 1st special election runoff for District Attorney is quickly approaching, and so is the deadline to request an absentee ballot. 

The ballot request is mandatory, even for voters who have voted absentee throughout the year. Voters wishing to apply for an absentee ballot must do so by November 25 and should return it no later than 7 pm on the day of the election. People can submit their applications via drop off, mail, email or fax. Ballots may be submitted by mail, in person or at one of six dropbox locations.
