The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission will vote on the proposed tax allocation district, or TAD, on Tuesday. TADS work by increasing property taxes within a defined area to fund improvements within that area.
District 2 commissioner Mariah Parker:
“We're hoping to improve connectivity with regards to like pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure as well as stimulating economic development there so that folks that live in some of the suburban or you know, outlying areas of assets, can you know, walk or bike to a coffee shop or a laundromat or a community center to create sort of more robust community in these places.”
The Areas of consideration for the TAD include West Broad and Hawthorne, Newton Bridge, Lexington highway, East Downtown, the Georgia Square Mall, and North Avenue.
