ACC Mayor & Commisson to Vote on Downtown Athens Historic District

Ryan Cameron

The Athens Clarke County Mayor and Commission will have a special called session at 6 PM tonight.

The primary purpose of the meeting tonight is to vote on the Western Downtown Athens Local Historic District Designation. The goal of this designation is to turn western downtown Athens into a historic district, which will preserve the character and history of this area by preventing property owners from changing the exterior of their buildings.

According to Flagpole Magazine, property owners "would still be able to develop on vacant or parking lots, as well as redevelop non-contributing (or non-historic) structures, with approval from the Historic Preservation Commission."

This vote comes after nearly two years of debates about the creation of a historic district in western downtown.

The meeting can be viewed live at accgov.com/videos at 6 PM tonight.

Thirty minutes prior to the meeting, Jesse Houle will be sworn in as Commissioner for district six. This will be their first meeting as a commissioner.
