ACCPD Chief is Finalist for Maryland Chief Position

Athens-Clarke County Police Chief Cleveland Spruill

Athens Clarke-County Chief of Police Cleveland Spruill is a finalist for a job in Frederick, Maryland.

First reported by Flagpole Magazine on Monday, Spruill is one of two finalists for Chief of Police in Frederick, Maryland.

Spruill was first hired as Athens Chief of Police in early 2019 and has faced criticism from the community throughout his two-year tenure. In 2019 ACCPD officers shot six suspects killing five. This resulted in a new policy from Spruill involving officer response to armed individuals.

In 2020, there were calls for Spruill’s resignation after his decision to use tear gas and less-lethal rounds on peaceful Black Lives Matter protests in downtown Athens.

Yesterday Spruill spoke to the Frederick community via Zoom alongside the other finalist, Pittsburgh Police Captain Jason Lando.
