ACCPD Make an Arrest in Shooting of UGA Student

WSB Radio

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department announced Tuesday morning that they have arrested a suspect in the armed robbery of two University of Georgia students and the shooting of one of them.

Police arrested 20-year-old Zarren Garner around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday in Gwinnett County. Garner is an Athens resident. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of armed robbery and one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony. At a press conference Tuesday morning, GBI Agent Mike Ayers said more charges may be forthcoming.

The incidents occured Monday morning around 7:15 a.m. at the Milledge Place apartment complex on Milledge Avenue near the 10 Loop.

ACCPD was first called to a bus stop just outside Milledge Place after reports of shots fired. Tate Prezzano, a 22-year-old UGA lacrosse player, had been shot and was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

While there, a second call came in from another victim, also a UGA student, who had been approached by the suspect and robbed at gunpoint just minutes before Prezzano was shot.

Prezzano's father provided an update on his condition at the press conference.

"Tate is doing well. I think the most important thing for everybody to know is that he's getting rest, and today we look forward to Tate making some progress," Prezzano said.

The family also expressed gratefulness for the support of the Athens community, local and state law enforcement and Governor Brian Kemp, who called the family yesterday.
