African Perspectives for October 24, 2021

This penultimate episode in October, the designated Black History Month in England, focuses on news updates from the East African region. Beginning with the sustained celebration of the 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature going to Abdurazak Gurnah of Tanzania, the episode featured news from Kenya about the murder of 25-year-old athlete, world record holder runner, Agnes Tirop. The episode also features an urgent update from Sudan with increasing threat from the military to the civilian-military government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. The show rounded up with the announcement of the 2021 African Studies Fall Lecture to be delivered by Professor Adeolu Okunade, Professor of Music, University of Port Harcourt and Visiting Scholar of the UGA African Studies Institute on October 26, 2021 on the topic, “Singing our Songs in a foreign land:

Emergence and Ascendancy of African Musical Arts in the Diaspora.” As always, the episode featured selected enjoyable music from Africa and/or by Africans with specific selections from two 2001 collections, Best of Africa and African Odyssey.
