When breast cancer survivors Karen Reid and Joy Ovington came together in the StoryCorps Mobile Booth, it was their first time meeting face-to-face. Karen and Joy originally met on an online support group for women who had voluntary double mastectomy surgeries with reconstruction. In this conversation, the pair discuss their individual experiences in choosing to have their surgeries and their advice for other women confronting the realities of breast cancer. StoryCorps Athens stories were recorded locally at the StoryCorps mobile booth at the Athens-Clarke County Library in the Fall of 2018. StoryCorps is part of a national initiative to record and preserve the stories of everyday people.
