BikeAthens is partnering with local law firm Blasingame, Burch, Garrard & Ashley in celebrating Bike to Work Day by providing free bike lights. Tyler Dewey is Executive Director for BikeAthens
“It’s very important to be visible,” according to Dewey. "We’re a grantee of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and one of the keys to improving safety was visibility. Bike lights are somewhat of a specialized item. You just can’t find them anywhere and they can expensive depending on which model you buy, so the ability to install them on someone’s bike is really helpful for the people riding.”
The Bike to Work Day Celebration & Bike Light Giveaway will be held Friday, May 18, at BikeAthens, located at 1075 W. Broad Street, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.
“The law form provided us a generous donation the buy all the lights and we’ll have a quite a few. If you have a bike and you’d in need of lights, and we’d like to give out most of the lights to people who can’t afford to go to a bike shop and buy them themselves. We will install the lights and also give them a little hand card that has very quick keys to traffic law to both people driving and riding a bike.”
Georgia law requires bikes to have a white light at night that can be seen up to 300 feet. The rear of a bike must have a red light (or red reflector) that’s also visible up to 300 feet.
May is national bike month and this week is National Bike to Work Week.
