Books for Keeps to Host Bunco for Books Fundraiser

Books for Keeps

Books for Keeps is holding a Bunco for Books fundraiser Thursday evening.

The event will feature games, prizes, food and a silent auction. Organizers say no experience is necessary. Patty Booth is a board member for Books for Keeps and the Bunco committee chair.

“Bunco for Books is a fundraiser that we do annually, this is the second one. We pull together up to one hundred people and we play bunco by very simple rules. We teach you how to play Bunco, so you don’t have to come with prior experience,” Booth said.

Avid Bookshop will also hold a Pop Up book sale at the event.

Executive Director Leslie Hale shares the Books for Keeps mission.

“We are a literacy organization that is research based, founded around the idea that when children have access to books during the summer they’re going to be able to keep up the gains that they made during the school year,” Hale said. “Conversely a child who doesn’t have access to books during summer, is at risk of falling two to three months in reading achievement behind their peers just because of that summer spent without books.”

Hale says Books for Keeps is currently in 12 of the 14 Athens public elementary schools and they are working to reach the remaining two.

The event is from 5:30 to 8:30 at the VFW Post 2872 on (835) Sunset Drive in Athens. Tickets are $25. For more information, call 706-543-0802.
