CARES Act has helped UGA preserve jobs and offer aid to students

UGA President Jere W. Morehead has announced that though the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the university economically, recent funds provided by the federal Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act has lessened some of the strain.

The CARES Act, which was granted through an application process with the US Department of Education, provided a total of $23.7 million. $11.85 million was granted to students, and another $11.85 million was given as institutional aid. The grant has helped UGA support students, preserve jobs, and ready campus for the return of students, faculty, and staff this autumn.

Student aid was made available through the Higher Education Emergency Relief (HEER) Fund (part of CARES). Students eligible for need-based financial aid received assistance during Spring semester to help cover costs related to the pandemic. Students enrolled in summer programs may also be eligible for another grant. To date, over thirteen thousand students have received assistance from the HEER Fund.

Institutional aid has provided relief for student-service operations such as housing, dining services, and the University Health Center. These sectors have lost significant revenue due to student refunds. Funds from the CARES Act have been used to sustain jobs and cover payroll costs.
