Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr today announced that he will formally appoint District Attorney appoint Cobb County District Attorney Joyette Holmes to lead the prosecution of Gregory and Travis McMichael. The father and son have been charged with aggravated assault and murder in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery. Holmes takes over the case from DA Tom Durden, who felt the case needed an office with more resources.
The Valdosta native became Cobb’s first female and African-American district attorney when Gov. Brian Kemp appointed her to replace Vic Reynolds, who took over as GBI director. The GBI is now heading the investigation into Arbery’s death. In a statement, Holmes said “Our office will immediately gather all materials related to the investigation thus far and continue to seek additional information to move this case forward,” DA Holmes said. “We appreciate the confidence that Attorney General Carr has in our office’s ability to bring to light the justice that this case deserves.”
Holmes is a graduate of the University of Georgia and the University of Baltimore School of Law in Maryland.
