Clarke Board of Education to hear plans on West Broad site

CCSD

The Clarke County Board of Education meets tonight, with the future of the West Broad School site on the agenda. At the 6pm meeting, Board members will get information on two different building plans for the site.

Both options preserve the former school building on Minor Street, and both include a new building as well. The major difference between the two is what happens to another building on the site – a two story structure facing Campbell Street.

In one plan, the Campbell Street building would be demolished and replaced with an outdoor area and pavilion. The other plan keeps the Campbell Street building intact. District officials say that tearing down the Campbell Street building offers a number of advantages, including making access to the Minor Street building and a new early learning center easier and safer.

Historic preservation advocates, however, have argued and protested in favor of keeping the Campbell Street building intact because of its historic significance.

The West Broad School site has nettled District officials for a number of years, and now the Board of Education finds itself in a position of having to act quickly or risk losing a $15 million federal grant for the construction of the early learning center.
