Commission Approves SPLOST 2020 Projects/Means Contract Extended

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners have voted on the final SPLOST 2020 project list. Among the items approved on the $300 million list: a 55-hundred seat arena for the Classic Center.

In addition to the $34 million project, the list included more than 70 million for a new courthouse and the renovation of the current facility for government offices, and $44 million for affordable housing.

A library branch in East Athens, renovations at Bear Hollow Zoo and a multi-use path for Tallassee Road were also approved.

Voters will decide on the referendum on November 5. If approved, collections will begin in April 2020.

Also, happening Thursday evening, The Clarke County School Board voted to extend the contract of Superintendent Demond Means to 2022. Some community members felt were concerned about division in Athens regarding the superintendent and recent decisions, including this woman who did not want to reveal her name.

“I think the polarization of this community at this point weighed very heavily in this room tonight,” concerned community member.

The board also voted 8–1 to ask the state Professional Standards Commission for clarification on how to proceed with an investigation into an ethics complaint filed against Means in May.
