Commissioners to discuss downtown public restroom

ACC Government

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners will get a look at potential plans for a public restroom downtown at their work sessiontomorrow. County officials have been looking at the possibility of creating a public restroom downtown for some time, and the county received 672 responses to a public input survey conducted earlier this year.

The restroom will be at the corner of Washington Street and College Avenue, and survey respondents were asked, among other things, to express a preference about whether the existing loading zone should be preserved or cut back in size. Most preferred making the loading zone smaller and allowing more room for the restroom as well as temporary bathrooms during busy times like home football games.

After tallying up the responses, county staff are ready to make recommendations for commissioners to discuss tomorrow and possibly vote on early next month. Among the must-have items suggested by county staff are twice-daily cleaning, an outdoor sink, fee-free feminine hygiene products, and a water bottle filling station.

Early estimates put the construction costs at $314,000, and operating costs at $33,000 per year. Lawmakers are expected to discuss the concept Tuesday and possibly vote early next month whether to move ahead to the design and bid phases.

Commissioners will also be discussing potential T-SPLOST projects and a disparity study at tomorrow’s work session. That work session begins at 5:30 PM and will be streamed on the county's YouTube page.
