Family Promise of Athens is hosting its largest fundraiser of the year this afternoon. This year’s La Table event is virtual due to the pandemic. Executive Director Davin Welter says though supporters cannot gather in-person, there are some benefits to going online.
"As you look back over the last year, and you think about some of the silver linings that come through this tragic pandemic that we're in, one of the things that's great about holding this event virtually is that anyone can participate and watch the video. Our audience can be much larger than what it's been in the past."
Family Promise provides shelter to homeless families in Athens. Area houses of worship shelter the families in their facilities and congregations provide meals, childcare, transportation, and a wide array of additional services. Board Member Tammy Gilland says that allows the nonprofit to take care of other concerns facing their families.
"We really focus on trying to find these families affordable housing, case management, helping them learn how to do budgeting. It really allows us to make sure that, while the families are with us, we're not just addressing the culminant problem or the immediate future, we're trying to find a long-term result to homelessness.
