Family Promise Raises Awareness About Family Homelessness

Family Promise of Albuquerque

This week is National Family Promise Week which is part of a national campaign to raise awareness about family homelessness and the challenges facing low-income families during the pandemic. Davin Welter is Executive Director of Family Promise of Athens (formerly known as Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens).

“Celebration across the country of Family Promise and the work that it does when so many folks have lost their jobs, or have incurred medical expenses that have the led them to a situation where it’s more precarious, at risk for homeless, so that’s really what this week is.”

The effort is getting support from ACC Mayor Kelly Girtz.

“Mayor Girtz very generously proclaimed this week to be Family Promise Week here in Athens-Clarke County just as an effort to raise awareness of the work that we do and the need that we have here in Athens.”

Welter says there are about 40 congregations involved in Athens, which provide a wide range of assistance.

“Our families stay in the congregational facilities, and then congregation members provide the food for their meals during this time because, of course, with online schooling going on, virtual schooling going on during the pandemic, we have got some tutors coming in, assisting families.

Family Promise of Athens is one of 200 Family Promise Affiliates nationwide.
