Georgia Department of Labor on March Jobs Numbers/Veterans' Job Fair in Athens

Northeast Georgia is posting strong job numbers in the most recent report from the Georgia Department of Labor. Commissioner Mark Butler says the unemployment rate dropped in March to 3.5 percent, a two-tenths decrease.

Preliminary results showed the 10-county area also posted monthly losses in labor force and while the number of employed residents increased in March.

“Even though we did see the total number of individuals that are in the labor force decrease, these are individuals that are either working or actively seeking work, we did see that number decrease; we actually saw an overall increase in the total number in the total number of individuals employed,” according to Butler. “We’re seeing signs of fewer layoffs, not just over the month but we’re seeing fewer claims filed this March for unemployment than we saw the same time a year goal.”

A year ago, the rate was 3.8 percent.
