Georgia Ranks in Top Ten on 2020 List of Best States for Racial Equality in Civic Engagement

With the 2020 election nearing and a lower percentage of Black Americans registered to vote compared to white Americans, a new study shows Georgia ranks as one of the best states for Racial Equality in Civic Engagement.

Jill Gonzalez, an analyst with the personal finance website WalletHub, explains why Georgia is in the top 10.

“Georgia did best in terms of its voter turnout rate, one of the highest in the country and this is something we looked at, just looking at the last presidential election,” Gonzalez said. “What will be interesting to see how that changes in this upcoming election. That’s one area where civically we’re seeing pretty good numbers, we also see that there is a pretty even volunteer rate as well.”

However, she says, there is definitely room for improvement in some areas.

“Georgia could use the most improvement when it comes to its gap in the share of single parent households, pretty big gap there as well as the gap in the share of adult population on parole.”

Analysts shared steps that can help level the playing field.

“Looking at mail-in ballots I think would be first and foremost the way to go. We have seen pretty good traction with that so I think that if we continue that trajectory we should be all good.”

48 states and Washington D.C. were compared. New Mexico was number on the list with the most racial equality in civic engagement, while Wisconsin was dead last.
