Iconic Waffle House to Close

Before man walked on the moon, he could walk to the 5 Points Waffle House.

Since opening on Dec. 10, 1968, the Waffle House location has taken up a prominent spot on the famous Five Points intersection in Athens, on the corner of South Milledge and Lumpkin streets. The restaurant will be closing at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 25.

Many residents of the 5 Points neighborhood and UGA community have fond memories of the Waffle House and expressed disappointment at its imminent closure; Elise Robinson is one of them. “We are just devastated, this is our favorite Waffle House in town and it’s been here for so long. It’s such a part of the community and we’re sad to see it gone.” Robinson said, “We’re going to see if we can find [a new Waffle House to eat at] but this one is a great location and we have a lot of history here with the crew. They’re such a great crew, we know a lot of them personally, and it’s just not going to be the same without them. ”

Drew Moody, another resident of Athens, said that he is also very disappointed in the Waffle House’s closure. “I gotta say that it’s pretty sad. We actually have this thing called “WaHo Monday” where we have a group of people who came and ate here every Monday. Our group text has been blowing up and we’re all really depressed that it’s shutting down,” Moody said, “It’s definitely a sad day for all of us. We’ll definitely keep going. We might have to move to the Downtown Waffle House because I hear that’s a good one, but there’s a lot of tradition in [the 5 Points Waffle House] so it’s going to be sad for sure.”

But before the last time that the doors close, the location has one last hurrah planned for the Athens community. According to a sign posted at the front of the restaurant, waffles will be sold for one dollar from 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 23 until the location permanently closes. According to the Red & Black, the owner of the property told the Waffle House’s management team that he has decided to go into another area of investment involving the property, but those plans are as of now undisclosed.
