Interim Clarke County Superintendent, Dr. Xernona Thomas, Tests Positive for COVID-19

Interim Clarke County Superintendent, Dr. Xernona Thomas has tested positive for COVID-19. Dr. Thomas was hospitalized for her symptoms. According to an email from Communications Manager Beth Moore, the district cannot provide personal information of staff, however, Dr. Thomas decided to publicly share her results. She is currently resting comfortably at home.

“I am humbled and grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers from this community,” states Dr. Thomas. “We have an enormous responsibility to identify the safest manner to return staff and students to our buildings. My own experience has helped the team recognize the challenges that accompany the pandemic.”

She reminds the community to wear a mask, practice social distancing, and thoroughly wash their hands (watch Barrow Elementary students demonstrate the proper technique). “I am excited when I can see our students and staff in person,” she adds.

The Clarke school board will hold a called Thursday, July 16, to discuss changing the school calendar. Registration to to select in-person or distance/digital learning will be postponed until a start date has been approved.
