Names Released in Officer-Involved Shooting in Athens

Georgia Bureau of Investigation

The names of those involved in Saturday’s shooting have been released.

The GBI says the suspect who was shot has been identified as 28-year old Salvador Salazar of North Carolina.

Investigators say he remains in the hospital in serious condition.

The incident happened when Athens-Clarke County Police Department officers responded to a domestic incident at University Gardens Apartments.

When they arrived they were confronted by Salazar who was armed with a machete.

According to a GBI media release, he ignored commands to drop the weapon and attacked officer Roger Williams, who fired at Salazar, striking him. Williams is on administrative leave with pay, in accordance with department policy.

No officers were injured

An arrest warrant for Salazar has been issued and turned over to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office. He is facing one count of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

The ACCPD requested the GBI Investigation.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Once complete, it will be turned over to the Athens-Clarke County District Attorney’s Office for review.

The ACCPD reminds the public that victims of domestic violence or abuse can call Project Safe at 706-543-3331. The local agency works to end domestic violence through crisis intervention, prevention and education in the community.
